World Immunization Week Highlights the Power of Vaccines

World Immunization Week is taking place from April 24 to April 30, with a clear message: vaccines save lives. This annual event aims to highlight the critical role that vaccines play in protecting people of all ages from preventable diseases and to emphasize that everyone should have access to life-saving immunizations.

Vaccines Save Millions of Lives Every Year

Since 1974, immunization efforts have been estimated to save over 154 million lives globally, reducing infant deaths by around 40%. Vaccines not only protect individuals but also contribute to broader community protection.

Immunization Is Critical for People Living with HIV

For people living with HIV, vaccination is especially crucial. HIV compromises the immune system, leaving individuals more susceptible to infections and serious complications from vaccine-preventable diseases such as pneumococcal disease, hepatitis B, influenza, human papillomavirus (HPV), and COVID-19. Research indicates that individuals with HIV are at higher risk of severe illness and mortality from COVID-19 compared to the general population, underscoring the need to prioritize vaccine access for this community.

It is essential that people living with HIV receive vaccines that are both safe and effective for those with weakened immune systems. Inactivated vaccines, such as the seasonal influenza shot and COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, are generally considered safe. However, live attenuated vaccines, like the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) and varicella vaccines, might require careful evaluation based on an individual’s immune status and CD4 cell count.

Getting vaccinated on time can help prevent other infections that could make health problems worse for people living with HIV. That’s why it’s important for them to have regular vaccine checkups and catch up on any missed vaccines as part of their normal healthcare.
