Dr. Roger Paredes MD, PhD, is the MISTRAL coordinator and oversees all workpackages. Dr. Paredes is Section Chief at the Infectious Diseases Department and PI of the Microbial Genomics group at the irsiCaixa AIDS Research Institute, both at the Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol, Badalona, Catalonia, Spain. He specialised in HIV research at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School thanks to a La Caixa grant for postgraduate studies. He has co-authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications, with >13000 citations (>7000 since 2014), an H index = 52 (38 since 2015) and an i10 index=145 (113 since 2015). . He is member of key national and international HIV clinical guidelines committees incluiding the WHO HIV treatment guidelines. In addition, Dr Paredes is member of the WHO ResNet Steering Committee and Advisor to the WHO-Europe Laboratory Initiative. The microbial genomics group at irsiCaixa is one of the main international research groups studying the role of the gut microbiome in HIV infection. They were the first to identify a link between gut microbiome composition and sexual practices, and a dose-effect relationship between nadir CD4+ counts and gut dysbiosis. Currently, the group is working on understanding the role of the gut microbiota on HIV vaccine responses.
